Scope and Contents Pedro Sarmiento (1905-1998) worked for the U.S. Army in the Philippines and married Cresenciana Calvelo (1908-1979) in 1931. During World War II earned a Bronze Medal and Purple Heart. He fought in the Battle of Bataan and was captured as a prisoner of war. After the war the family lived where Pedro was stationed, but settled in Chevy Chase, D.C., when he retired in 1957. Pedro and Cresenciana's son, Pedro David, Jr., was born in 1933 in Manila.
